Education, Education, Education…

February 9, 2009

Its always nice to see ambitious colour schemes used on the building envelope, and the Niekee School in the Netherlands is certainly a great example of this. This school has recently won an award from the Dutch Ministry of Education. The school was visited and assessed on various aspects of sustainability, flexibility and physical durability of building use. The Jury also looked at how well the learning experience is translated through the building itself.

The Jury found that the Niekee school had a natural relationship between building and environment, with a striking colour scheme on the exterior, a beautifully designed entrance and a large atrium inside creating a vibrant and open area with balanced daylighting. A mixture of Colour, large open areas and good sustainability credentials meant that the Niekee school was a natural choice as one of the winners of the “Scholenbouwprijzen 2008″ …or School Construction Prize 2008.

The outside of the building uses all 27 standard colours in the Colorcoat HPS200® range (now superseeded by Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra, with a maintenence free Confidex® Guarantee of up 30 years (Now up to 40 years with Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra)

Do you think the UK (or indeed wherever you are) should have schools more like this? What are your thoughts on both the exterior and the interior of the school? Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra now has 40 standard Colours with many tonal shades in the range .

Take a look at our case study here with a focus on the exterior of the school, and an article on the whole building (including interior images) here. Any comments? Why not post your thoughts  - i’d be interested to hear them.
